About Whittington
Description of Whittington, Shropshire
Located to the east and north-northeast of Oswestry, the settlement and civil parish of Whittington may be found in northwestern Shropshire, England. In 2011, there were 2,592 people living in the parish. Whittington is the main settlement within the parish, surrounded by the smaller communities of Park Hall to the west, Hindford to the north-east, and Babbinswood to the south.
History
The Domesday Book documents a sizable population in the area now known as Whittington, thus it was clearly populated back in prehistoric times and may have even been a prominent Dark Age castle. Evidence suggests that Cynddylan's white-town Trefwen (white-town) was the original location of Whittington, the legendary capital of the Pengwern kingdom.
In the summer of 1114, when King Henry I of England invaded Powys, he likely bestowed Whittington upon William Peverel. It is likely that William built Whittington Castle, but it was afterwards conquered by Welsh forces led by Madog ap Maredudd of Powys and eventually awarded to Roger Powys by King Henry II. From the time of King John until the time of Fulk III FitzWarin(d.1258), whose life is chronicled in a medieval romance, it remained in the Powys family.
After falling to Llywelyn the Great, the castle was rebuilt in stone in 1221, with Henry III's reluctance. Llywelyn retook it in 1223 but gave it back the next year. The FitzWarins held onto it until the year 1420.
The castle remains are still around and even got a facelift not too long ago. Everyone is welcome to visit them.
Governance
While the Whittington Parish Council serves as the primary level of government, the majority of administrative tasks are handled by the unitary Shropshire Council. Every four years, on the same day, elections are held for both bodies.
There is both a ward and a division for voting, both of which use the same name. The population of the ward, which includes the area south to West Felton, was 4,067 as of the 2011 census.
Whittington Parish and West Felton Parish are both included in the Congressional District.
