About Southfields

Description of Southfields

Southfields, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, is about 9 kilometres (6.8 miles) south-west of Charing Cross. There are primarily residential areas in Southfields, which is located in both the SW18 and SW19 postcode districts and was originally a part of Wandsworth.

Geographical of Southfields

The postcodes for Southfield are located in both the London Borough of Wandsworth and the London Borough of Merton. These descriptions apply to Wimbledon Park, but not to King George's Park, the other major park, which is located entirely within the Borough of Wandsworth. A large number of public tennis courts can be found in both parks, as tennis is an integral part of daily life in Southfields. Many different kinds of water sports can be enjoyed on the landscaped lake at Wimbledon Park, which is also home to an athletic track. Towards the south side of the Southfields triangle, you'll find the smaller but no less historic Coronation Gardens, which were built to honour King Edward VII's coronation in August 1902.

Governance

Three of Wandsworth Borough Council's sixty members—Conservative Party members Kim Caddy, Guy Humphries, and Terry Walsh—represent Southfields, one of the borough's twenty wards. There are London Assembly representatives from Merton and Wandsworth here.

Parliamentary representation for Southfields is provided by the Putney constituency. Fleur Anderson, a Labour Party member, was elected in 2019 with a majority of 4,774 votes and is the current MP for the constituency.

Demography

Southfields had a population of 17,962 in the 2011 census. White people make up a majority (75.6%) of the area's population.

There is also a sizable South African community here, mostly made up of young white immigrants who have been forced to leave their country of origin in search of work as economic conditions there deteriorated (following the introduction of Black Economic Empowerment).

Popular culture

The music video for the song "Trouble," by the band Shampoo, was shot in Southfields in 1994.

Despite a three-year campaign by a local group to convert the building back to a local cinema, which would have been named The Southfields Plaza, the owners of the site were granted permission to demolish the former cinema premises on Wimbledon Park Road, most recently used as a snooker club.

The very first mosque in London was built in Southfields that same year, 1926. Before the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community relocated its international headquarters to Farnham in 2019, it was located in the Fazl Mosque, also known as the London Mosque.

The Chapman Square SW19 was the inspiration for the name of the first album by the band Lawson.
