About Southport

Description of Southport

Southport is a popular coastal resort in the Sefton Metropolitan Borough on the English county of Merseyside. With a population of 90,336 as of the 2001 census, it ranked as the ninth most populated municipality in the North West region of England.

Southport is a coastal city in England that borders the Irish Sea to the south and the Ribble estuary to the north. Located 14.2 miles (23.8 km) southwest of Preston and 16.7 miles (26.9 km) north of Liverpool, the town is easily accessible.

Historically part of Lancashire, Southport became a municipal borough in 1866. When its population surpassed 50,000 in 1915, it was granted county borough status and became autonomous from Lancashire (the 1911 census gave a figure of 51,643). Southport expanded in 1912 to incorporate the previously separate Birkdale Urban District, which included the parishes of Birkdale and Ainsdale. Southport Town Hall served as the seat of government for the county borough.

Geographical description of Southport

Cities of Preston, 12 miles (20 km) to the north-east, and Liverpool, 17 miles (27 km) to the south, are the nearest major urban areas.

Southport is located on the low-lying West Lancashire Coastal Plain and has historically been subject to flooding. This would be most noticeable on Marine Drive in Southport, which is routinely closed due to flooding. However, work on the new sea defenses began in February 1997, and they were finally finished in 2002.

Southport, like the rest of the United Kingdom, experiences a marine climate. Southport's proximity to the sea means the city almost never experiences significant snowfall and, consequently, frost. The average annual low temperature in Southport is 5.2 degrees Celsius (27.8 degrees Fahrenheit). As opposed to the majority of the western UK, Southport often has moderate amounts of precipitation.

Demography

The population of Southport was 90,336 as of the 2001 United Kingdom Census.  About 19,000 were younger than 16, 60,000 were between the ages of 16 and 74, and 10,000 were 75 and older. Nearly everyone in Southport (96%) claims British birthplaces, per the 2001 census.

There is some contention over what precisely it is that makes a person a "Sandgrounder" from Southport.

Governance

The Southport constituency has been a crucial battlefield between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats for a long time, but Labour has become a serious challenger in recent years. After 16 years as Southport's representative, John Pugh retired before the 2017 General Election, at which time the Conservatives won the seat while the Liberal Democrats' Sue McGuire finished in third place. In 2019, Damien Moore, the incumbent MP, had a majority of 4,147 votes.
