Introduction & Geography

Southoe and Midloe form a small civil parish in Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, England. The parish consists of Southoe, the larger village, and Midloe, a much smaller rural settlement or hamlet to the west. Together they lie in the western part of Cambridgeshire, close to the border with Bedfordshire and approximately six miles south-west of Huntingdon. Southoe is situated just west of the A1 Great North Road, while Midloe is reached by a rural track through the surrounding countryside.

The parish covers approximately 962 hectares and had a population of 379 at the 2021 Census. It has a distinctly rural character, with agricultural fields, farmhouses, hedgerows, woodland and country lanes surrounding the settlements.

Southoe is the principal settlement. It is described locally as both an agricultural and commuter village because many residents work or obtain services in nearby towns. Its position close to the A1 makes travel towards Huntingdon, St Neots, Bedford and other parts of eastern England relatively convenient.

Midloe is considerably smaller. It lies west of Southoe among open agricultural land and consists of only a small number of properties. Huntingdonshire District Council's settlement assessment identifies Midloe as a very small settlement with only a few dwellings and no shops or other substantial services of its own.

The parish is bounded on its eastern side by the River Great Ouse, which separates the area from Great Paxton. This river has been an important geographical feature throughout the history of the surrounding region. It contributes to the landscape and provides habitats for wildlife.

Southoe and Midloe are also close to St Neots, which lies less than five miles away. St Neots provides extensive shopping, employment, education, healthcare and leisure facilities. The town also has a railway station on the London–Peterborough railway line, providing connections towards London and northern destinations.

The countryside around the parish provides opportunities for walking and cycling. Southoe lies close to National Cycle Route 12, while nearby attractions include Grafham Water and Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.

History & Formation

Southoe has a long history of settlement. The village has been known by several names over the centuries, including Sutham, Sutho, Suho and Southogh. These changing forms demonstrate how English place names developed as spelling conventions changed over time.

The history of Southoe is closely associated with agriculture and land ownership. For centuries, residents depended on the surrounding land for cultivation and livestock farming. The Great Ouse valley provided a productive agricultural environment, while the river and its surrounding landscape influenced the development of the parish.

One of the most interesting historical features is a homestead moat east of Southoe. Local historical material suggests that the moat may mark the site of a house associated with the Lovetot family, who made Southoe their chief residence around 1298. This provides evidence of the importance of the settlement during the medieval period.

Southoe's church provides another important connection with its medieval past. St Leonard's Church has its origins in approximately the twelfth century. The present building contains substantial medieval fabric, including parts of the chancel and the remains of a Norman doorway.

The church was substantially altered over several centuries. Around the thirteenth century, the chancel was extended, the nave was rebuilt and a south arcade and aisle were added. Around 1500, a north arcade and aisle were added, while the tower was constructed towards the end of the sixteenth century. The building was restored in 1859.

These changes show that St Leonard's Church was not built at one time. Instead, it developed gradually as the village grew and changed.

Midloe has an equally interesting but much smaller history. The settlement is surrounded by farmland and contains a number of historic farm buildings. Its most important historic building is Midloe Grange, a farmhouse standing on a moated site.

Historic England identifies Midloe Grange as a Grade II listed building. The farmhouse was probably built for Robert Payne of St Neots around 1590. It is timber-framed and contains later additions, including a seventeenth-century brick stair turret and an eighteenth-century dairy extension.

The survival of Midloe Grange is particularly valuable because it demonstrates how an agricultural estate developed over several centuries. Its moat, timber frame, fireplaces and later additions reveal different phases of the building's history.

Southoe and Midloe were originally separate civil parishes. They were combined into a single parish sometime between 1931 and 1951. Historical census information shows that the two communities had previously been recorded separately.

The twentieth century brought changes to the local population and economy. Mechanisation reduced the number of workers required in agriculture, while improved roads made it easier for residents to travel to St Neots, Huntingdon and other towns for work and services.

Today, the parish remains strongly rural but is increasingly connected with the larger settlements around it. The survival of historic buildings and archaeological features gives Southoe and Midloe an important place within the heritage of Huntingdonshire.

Popular & Notable Places

The most prominent historic attraction in Southoe is St Leonard's Church. Standing on the High Street, the church is a Grade I listed building and is one of the most important historic structures in the parish.

Its importance comes from both its architecture and its long history. The church contains surviving elements from a late-twelfth-century building, including medieval parts of the chancel and a reset south doorway. Later additions illustrate the architectural development of the building through the medieval and early modern periods.

The church remains central to the village community. Its position in the heart of Southoe helps reinforce the traditional relationship between the parish church and the village around it.

Another important historic building is Midloe Grange. Located in the rural landscape of Midloe, the Grade II listed farmhouse represents several centuries of agricultural history. Its moated setting and timber-framed structure make it particularly significant.

The Old Rectory in Southoe is also a listed historic building. Historic England describes it as a house consisting of several building phases, including a late-eighteenth-century section and an early-nineteenth-century eastern range. Its architecture includes timber framing, brickwork and a classical-style wooden portico.

Southoe's traditional village streets and houses are also part of its appeal. Older cottages, farmhouses and historic properties provide evidence of the village's agricultural past.

The Village Hall provides an important community facility. It supports local activities and helps maintain the social life of the parish. The local community also organizes events such as a summer fayre, Christmas activities, Easter events and quizzes.

The surrounding countryside is another major attraction. Southoe and Midloe are surrounded by farmland and open spaces, making the area particularly suitable for countryside walks, cycling and nature observation.

Nearby Grafham Water provides opportunities for walking, cycling, sailing and other outdoor activities. Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, near Little Paxton, is another important wildlife site with lakes, wetlands and habitats for birds and other wildlife.

The River Great Ouse also contributes to the natural character of the area. Its river corridor, meadows and surrounding countryside provide scenic landscapes and wildlife habitats.

For visitors interested in history, Southoe and Midloe are especially valuable because several different periods can be seen in a relatively small area: the medieval church, the historic homestead moat, the sixteenth-century Midloe Grange and later village buildings all contribute to the story of the parish.
