Leicester is located in the East Midlands of England and serves as the county town for the county of Leicestershire as well as being a city with its own unitary authority. It is the largest settlement in the East Midlands. It is Located on the banks of the River Soar and not far from the National Forest's eastern boundary is this bustling metropolis. It lies south of Nottingham and west of Peterborough, to the north-east of Birmingham and Coventry.

With an estimated 368,600 residents as of 2021, Derby is the most populated municipality in the East Midlands, thanks to a population rise of 38,800 (11.8%) since 2011. The combined population of the surrounding urban areas ranks 11th in England and 13th in the United Kingdom. 

Leicester is at the crossroads of two railway lines: the Midland Main Line and the Birmingham to London Stansted Airport line. The A6 and A46 trunk roads also meet here, as do the M1 and M69 freeways. Both the football team Leicester City and the rugby team Leicester Tigers call Leicester, England, home.

Economy of Leicester

Leicester is the second largest economy in the East Midlands, after Nottingham.

Companies such as Brantano Footwear, Dunelm Mill, Next, Shoe Zone, Everards brewing and associated businesses, KPMG, Mazars, Cambridge & Counties Bank, HSBC and Santander banking, Hastings Insurance, British Gas, British Telecom, Caterpillar (Inc.), Topps Tiles, and DHL Textiles all have significant sites or headquarters in Leicester and the surrounding area.

Throughout its history, the city has been closely linked to the manufacture of textiles, clothes, and footwear. Companies including Corah, Liberty Shoes, and Equity Shoes have closed, but Next and Boden are still going strong, while ASOS and New Look both produce in the city. Some textile factories have moved into the city in recent years because to the increased transportation costs and extended delivery periods associated with globalized manufacturing in Asia.

For a long time, people have worried about the safety of their jobs in this industry. There are more than a thousand factories in Leicester's garment area, and the total workforce may reach as high as ten thousand people. There have been less than sixty health and safety inspections and only twenty-eight fire inspections since October 2017. HMRC has made just 36 visits checking on compliance with minimum wage legislation; it has imposed penalties to less than 10 textile enterprises and collected just over £100,000 in arrears relating to 143 workers. According to a study conducted in 2010 by the University of Leicester and released in 2015, between seventy-five percent and a hundred and fifty percent of the workforce was paid less than three pounds per hour. Leicester's mayor, Peter Soulsby, gathered forty agencies in 2017 to plan a response. He intended to provide the best working conditions possible in Leicester, including generous wages, extensive training, and secure workplaces. In 2020 the HSE was warned to COVID-19 non-compliance.

Jones & Shipman (machine tools and control systems), Richards Engineering (foundry equipment), Transmon Engineering (materials handling equipment), and Trelleborg are all examples of engineering companies (suspension components for rail, marine, and industrial applications). Apprenticeship programs with local businesses and academic-industrial ties between the engineering departments at Leicester University, De Montfort University, and adjacent Loughborough University all contribute to the region's dedication to developing the next generation of British engineers. The world-famous Gents' of Leicester clock company was founded and is still headquartered in Leicester.
