About Stanley
Description of Stanley, County of Durham
Located in County Durham, North East England, Stanley is a former colliery town and civil parish. The town is located southwest of Gateshead, on a hilltop in the middle of Chester-le-Street and Consett.
West Stanley, the city proper, was once separated from East Stanley and South Stanley, both of which had developed around mining. East Stanley and South Stanley are no longer recognised as distinct municipalities because of their gradual incorporation into a single town (although they are still recognised colloquially).
Annfield Plain, Tanfield, Craghead, Catchgate, Tantobie, Tanfield Lea, South Moor, White-le-Head, Bloemfontein, Clough Dene, Greencroft, Harelaw, Kip Hill, The Middles, New Kyo, No Place, Oxhill, Quaking Houses, Shield Row, and West Kyo are all included in the civil parish of Stanley, which was established in 2007. Outside of Dipton and Burnopfield, the current parish encompasses the entirety of what was once the Stanley Urban District Council.
Geographical description of Stanley
The town has expanded into the surrounding areas, including Annfield Plain to the west and Beamish and Pelton to the east.
Economy of Stanley
Many locally owned shops and pubs have closed in "Old Stanley" over the past few decades due to the decline of traditional industries and the rise of large supermarkets and chain stores.
Front Street, the town's primary shopping thoroughfare, is pedestrian-only and features both locally owned boutiques and national chains like Boots. Every Thursday and Saturday, a market sets up shop on Front Street. The town also features grocery stores like Asda and Iceland. Tesco is considering building a new supermarket on the site of the Clifford Road Retail Complex, which is currently home to a Clearance Bargains as well as several empty buildings that formerly housed a Kwik Save, a Presto, a furniture store, and an indoor market.
Stanley's town centre has undergone a lot of renovations in recent years, with the newest additions being a solar-powered bus interchange and an extension to the Louisa Centre leisure facility that houses the new town swimming pool. There will be a new medical facility and a Sure Start children's centre built as part of the redevelopment in the future.
