About Barton

Description of Barton, Cambridgeshire

British settlement and civil parish located in the South Cambridgeshire area. Approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) to the south-west of Cambridge, close to the M11's junction 12.

History of Barton

The village might have been on Akeman Street, a Roman thoroughfare. Old English Barton (sometimes spelled Barton) is referenced in the Domesday Book. Landowners in the Barton area in 1086 were Robert, Count of Mortain, Humphrey from Guy de Raimbeaucourt, and William of Keynes.

Church Lane in Barton is home to both a Church of England church and a Baptist church. Cambridgeshire Churches has some photos and a brief history of the medieval St. Peter's Church. Natural burials are available in the Barton Woodland Burial Ground on the outskirts of town. Barton North and South Glebes make up the majority of the area, with additional subdivision into Oak, Ash, and Willow Glades within each glebe.

Economy of Barton

Conkers Stores, a conventional village shop and Post Office; the only gas station in the area, which is adjacent to a vehicle franchise and has a pretty substantial shop; a shoe store; a hair and beauty salon; and a car franchise.

The Hoops, on New Road, and the White Horse Inn, on High Street, are the two bars that serve the residents of the village. The Burwash Manor Barns are a country shopping complex in Barton that features a variety of shops and restaurants, including a butcher, organic market, tea rooms, toy store, wine shop, and Persian rug outlet. Visitors come from all across Cambridgeshire to see the facility. The Countryside Restoration Trust's (CRT) offices have been in Barton since the organization's inception in 1993.

There aren't many job opportunities in the town itself. The majority of people living in southern Cambridgeshire commute to jobs in London and the surrounding areas. People are starting to park their automobiles here and ride their bikes to work. On the outskirts of Barton, there is tentative planning for a park and ride/cycling facility.
